Ears... being one of the most important thing in human being.. it is a necessity to everyone born with normal hearing.
without ear, we won't be able to hear anything. There are not many cases in the world, that people are born without ears... There are but not many as compared to deafness..
Deaf - a word we used to scold people in our daily conversation. a word that we used to reprimand people when we think they totally don't care and forgot about what we have said. a word that a lot of people scared of. a word that a lot of people in this world have the status.
a word that brings everything to silent...

Hearing impairment is different from deaf, so do not categorize them together.
Hearing impairment is not inherited but due to certain conditions that create a wound or malfunction of the ear. Hearing impairment is partial loss of hearing in ONE or BOTH ears. Hearing impairment can be separated into a few levels and for each level there are different kinds of treatment to it.
Deaf on the other hand has no cure for it...... Deaf is either inherited or was caused by hearing impairment which in the end lead to Deafness. Deafness means the lost of hearing ability in ONE or BOTH ears.

Let's touch on the topic of Hearing impairment first...
2 types of hearing impairment:
1. Outer/Middle Ear (Conductive Impairment)
2. Inner Ear (Sensorineural Impairment)
Outer/Middle Ear impairment obviously from the given name, we can easily understand it is about the part in Outer/Middle Ear. This impairment is caused by the damage in the Outer/middle ear parts.

Let's make everything easier to understand. We shall treat our ear as a house or one of the floor in a house. Treat urself as Sound.
From the the Main Door (our ear - flap) we walk along the corridor (ear canal) to our Room Door (Ear Drum).
So while you are walking along that route, if the Main Door (our ear - flap) is closed (yesh, it happen in babies, so there isn't any ear hole), we won't be able to go into the house at all. Even if the main door is ok, we walked through it, along the corridor, if there is any humps or any obstructions, you will not be able to go in too. What I meant by humps or obstructions are wounds and ear wax. If there are too many ear wax it will obstruct the transmission of sound. Of course, our ears are clever enough to clear off some ear wax for us when it has accumulated alot but cleaning ear wax off is still needed. While cleaning ear wax, do becareful and do not injured urself while cleaning. This injury or wounds might caused the ear canal to be infected.
So after you have passed the Main Door and Corridor. Now you reach your Room Door. What so special about this door. This door is a very thin membrane that transmit all the sound into sound waves. This door is very vital for our hearing. Any damage to this membrane will cause impairment in your hearing. So While cleaning your ear wax do not clean till too deep that you reach the membrane and damage it.

After you have opened your Room Door, we have reach your room. This room has a window and an automatic "light up" system as you enter the room. look at the 3 bones at the middle ear: anvil, hammer and stirrups. That 3 are the automatic "light up" system that transmit energy to the inner ear. These 3 bones, transmit soundwaves to the cochlea in the inner ear. After your room has been light up, next is the window. Window is the Eustachian Tube in the ear. This tube is usually closed and will only open when you yawn, sneeze. This window act as the equalization of the air in the room. So let's take it as if the room is filled with smelly odour or stench.. we opened the window to allow odour to flow out and have fresh air to come in. Thus this window is vital for us.

In this Middle ear, no matter which part of the house is damaged, we can still repair it or have some prevention for it. All these are more of repairable stuffs that we can change and send for repair BUT as we go deeper, things going to be different.

let's say, there is a secret room inside the very room that we go in. This room is protected with security machine/door which will lead you to a secret room after you have opened it. The security machine is the Vestibule and the Semicircular canals. There are 2 doors and these 2 doors are well protected. If one of it failed to work, the rest of the thing in the secret room will not work. Thus even the very first door matters. As long as the first door is spoilt. The one after that will be totally of no use. Vestibule and semicircular canals affect the balance in us. I guess all of us heard about the water in the ear. yes.. This is where the water is. This one affects our body balance, we may feel unbalance while walking or easily fall down due to lose of balance, if you have ear problem, high chances that your unbalance is caused by your ear.

haha. I sound like I am re-doing my Final Year Project again, when I typed all these. My FYP was about hearing back then. If I were to use this as part of my FYP, I guess all these were just half of the introduction. haha.
Something I thought I will not touch after the FYP, now make me think back and read up on it again.
To a musician, hearing is so important. If you do not have hearing, how are you going to hear whether you are in tune or not? how are you going to know whether you are on the wrong place, wrong page, wrong articulations or whatsoever.
It is very difficult. Being a deaf musician, you will need to learn everything all over again. No matter you are a instrumentalist or a vocalists. everything takes time and the will to carry on will need to be very strong.
Mozart being one of the very famous composer in the world continue to compose beautiful songs even after he turned completely deaf. The will in him, just overcome alot of things...
Evelyn Glennie being my idol and one of the best percussionist in the world, she has not only shown her will in being a musician, she also exhibits the high standard of percussion playing and percussion performance. Even though she is deaf, she performs with every but of her body to make sure, the message of the music is conveyed to the audience. She can't hear it but she can feel it.
Ayumi Hamasaki another one of my idol. She is totally rocking! She is not completely deaf but one side deaf. She chose to continue to sing for her audience even though the lack in hearing might cause her career to go downhill. So what if she can't hear clearly now with only one ear working? So what if she can't sing as well as last time. Nothing matters. Her will to carry on has touched many people.

Everything takes time... acceptance of the fact is the only way out.
sadness is unavoidable.
